Things To Do In Tulbagh: Natural Lovers
Wondering what to do in Tulbagh? To start, all you need to do is step outside and soak up your surroundings (and it won’t cost you a cent)! For those who, like me, have an insatiable wanderlust and a love for nature, Tulbagh offers an abundance of nature-packed experiences:
1. Murludi Hiking Trails
Murludi offers two hiking routes:
- Elsbos Route (10 km/6.2 miles)
- River Route (4 km/2.4 miles)
The River Route winds through orchids while the Elbos Route has some of the best views in the valley.
2. Silwerfontein Hiking Trails
This trail offers a unique blend of nature and history. It’s spread over 2 days so do be prepared. You begin at Base Camp, which is an old double-decker bus conversation and trek towards the Ontongs Cave. From there you take another route back towards Base Camp, passing Voelvlei on the way.
Each day takes about 4 hours to complete.
3. Waterval Nature Reserve
A haven for flora and fauna, this reserve is a testament to South Africa’s diverse ecosystems. For someone who’s always up for an adventure, these trails inside the nature reserve are all a delightful discovery. The Waterval Loop may be short (2.1 km/1.3 mile) but the sights of the waterfall are well worth the trek!
5. Mountain Biking Routes
The rugged terrains of Tulbagh are perfect for mountain biking. If you’re a novice like me then the Tierkloof Traverse Trail is right up your alley. It’s a short 2.6 km (1.6 mile) ride. For a slightly longer spin, I’d recommend giving the Witzenberg: Wagon Trail to the Cross or the Bone Trail a go. These 8 km (5-mile) trails are worth the peddle.
6. Bird-Watching Spots
With my Roberts Guide and binoculars in tow, I found a quiet spot and lost myself in the world of birds in the Vindoux area. The area is home to a myriad of bird species, such as guineafowls, Cape Spurfowls, Bokmakieries, African Ibis (also known as a “hadeda” by the locals), and Cape Teal on the odd occasion.
7. Picnic by the Klein Berg River

1. Saronsberg Wine Cellar

Nestled at the foot of the Saronsberg mountain, this estate is a blend of modernity and tradition. Wine tasting at this spot was quite fun if I’m being honest.
The contemporary art collection here is as exquisite as the wines they produce.
2. Montpellier Wine Estate

3. Twee Jonge Gezellen

The Twee Jonge Gezellen is one of the oldest estates in the region; it’s a testament to the legacy of winemaking in Tulbagh. Each sip here is a journey through time and their lush, uber-stylish estate grounds are out of this world!
4. Schalkenbosch Wine Estate

Set against the backdrop of majestic mountains, this estate offers not just fine wines – the Merlot was my fav – but also breathtaking views (300 hectares worth!) that add to the tasting experience. My partner and I spent two nights in one of their stunning self-catering cottages. There was no internet connection in the rooms though, but I was able to catch up on some work around the swimming area.
5. Rijks Wine Estate

Rijks is known for its dedication to Pinotage. But I was already “wined out” by the time we got to this place if I’m being honest.
Instead, my partner and I opted to go for a wine-free lunch at their on-site restaurant. That mussel pot starter and Grass-Fed Chalmar Beef Steak definitely hit the spot!
The restaurant is open for breakfasts, lunches and dinners and we will be back to try out the rest of the menu!
Side note: Important times in the viticulture (wine-making) calendar are:

- Veraison = 4th week December to second week January.

Now this was more my kinda place as I’ve got a wee weak spot for cider. Loxtonia Ciders is based in Ceres, a short 30 km (18.6 miles) drive away.
The tasting room overlooks apple orchards and the magnificent Ceres Valley and my gosh, what a time to be alive! They have hiking trails and beautiful gardens to explore and it is a pet-friendly estate. I just wish I had my two pups, Charlie and Heidi with me!
7. Readers Restaurant

Tucked away in a historic building, this restaurant on Church Street offers a blend of traditional and contemporary dishes. Their malva pudding (a traditional South African dessert) is a must-try. These guys also make up awesome picnic baskets that are tailored for specific dietary requirements – I ordered one of these as my partner is vegan and it was out of this world!
8. Olive Terrace Bistro

The Olive Terrace Bistro is situated inside the Tulbagh Hotel and I’m happy to report – as I do not like olives – there aren’t just olives on the menu. The hotel has free Wi-Fi and backup generators, so working here was a breeze when load-shedding decided to hit. The restaurant is open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner and their line fish? Simply divine!
9. Coffee & Cream At Manely’s

Not a “restaurant” per se, but this hidden gem in Tulbagh is known for its baked goods and signature jaffles – kind of like a ’round’ toastie. As someone with a sweet tooth, I found myself coming back for more…and more!
10. Kloofzicht Farm Deli

This place was pretty cool with its mismatched chairs and tables giving it a quaint feel. Their selection of homemade treats was equally as cool; ranging from bespoke gins, lemon meringue pies, packaged biscuits and so much more.

There’s a certain thrill that comes with stepping out of your comfort zone, and for someone like me who once thrived on adrenaline-packed activities, Tulbagh was a treasure trove of adventures waiting to be discovered.
I remember my younger days, always seeking the next big thrill, and while I might have mellowed down a bit, the spirit of adventure still burns bright. Tulbagh, with its diverse landscape and wide range of “crazy” things to do, definitely rekindled that flame.
1. Ceres Zipline Adventures

When I said I’m a bit of a thrill seeker, it didn’t extend to ziplines (I’m a bit of a scared cat!). But my partner and I decided to give it a go and had to drive about 30 km (18.6 miles) to nearby Ceres for this activity.
Ceres Zipline Adventures were the first guys in the Western Cape to offer ziplining tours, so they do know a thing or two. Soaring above the picturesque landscapes was a zipline adventure that offered a bird’s-eye view of the valley. It’s an experience that’s both exhilarating and serene. And I kinda liked it! Ziplines vary from 100 m to 290 m.

This church, another landmark on historic Church Street, with its intricate design and rich history, was a sight to behold. It stands as a testament to Tulbagh’s architectural heritage and the stories of the people who once walked its halls. As a bit of a history nerd, I thought this place pretty cool.
Don’t be confused though, this museum is one of four museums on Church Street that fall under the “Tulbagh Museum” umbrella.To enter, you’ll need to buy your ticket from the tourist bureau inside the Earthquake Museum just down the street.
4. Anglo-Boer War Blockhouse

Exploring this ancient relic from the Anglo-Boer War era (1899 – 1902), I was transported to a time of conflict and strategy. It offered insights into the military installations of the time and the strategic importance of Tulbagh from way back when.

Just strolling down Church Street, I was captivated by the beautifully restored Cape Dutch, Edwardian, and Victorian buildings. Situated on Van der Stel Street, this daytime eatery is more than just a place for roosterkoek (a South African version of the UK’s bap). Their baked goods blew me away, especially the gooey chocolate cake, Pasteis de Nata and freshly baked farm bread.
And let me tell you, as someone who loves a strong Americano coffee, their flat whites were pretty good too.
2. Oakhurst Olives

A short drive outside Tulbagh, we stayed at this venue’s Boathouse self-catering accommodation. These luxury, secluded abodes overlook a mini lake and have mountain views for days! The venue itself, Oakhurst Olives, also offers olive tasting experiences. Since I’m not a fan of olives, my partner did the honours – tasting kalamata olives, olive marmalade, and cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil (I just came here for the views!)

This place is a dream. Staying in a treehouse that offers both luxury and a connection to nature was surreal. And can you believe it, each luxury treehouse had en-suite bathrooms, large spa bathtubs and wrap-around porches! And the spa? The perfect spot to unwind.

This shop is a showcase of Tulbagh’s talent. From locally designed and crafted products, such as handmade silver jewellery and ceramics to leather work and hemp clothing; it’s where I picked up a few souvenirs to remember my trip (and sent some back to Mum in Glasgow!)
5. Tractor Ride at Oudekloof Wine Estate

I thought I was too old for tractor rides but this scenic tractor ride up the Oudekloof Pass is something I’d recommend to anyone. The views of the Tulbagh mountains and the picnic at the end were the cherry on top. If you’re not up for a tractor ride, pop into their wine estate for wine tasting or a bite to eat at their onsite restaurant.

Tulbagh, with its blend of serene landscapes and boutique experiences, has always been my go-to escape. Whether it’s indulging in a massage, sipping on a freshly brewed cider, or simply parking off under a tree with my Kindle, this town offers a range of leisure activities that truly resonate with my soul.

My partner and I stayed in one of their couple’s farm cottages. The cottages offered fantastic panoramic mountain views, a private outdoor hot tub, a king-sized bed, plus free Wi-Fi, which was a bonus!
Side note: Try out Buchanans Brewery inside the estate – they serve a mean cider!
2. Fynbos Farm Animal Sanctuary

Situated in Wolseley, roughly 14 km (8.6 miles) to the south of Tulbagh, you’ll find this epic place. As someone who’s always had a soft spot for animals (especially my two dogs, Charlie and Heidi), visiting this animal sanctuary was a heartwarming experience and brought a huge smile to my face. I specifically loved the llamas, alpaca and zebra!
They have two nature trails to do, namely the Forest Trail (1.2 km/0.7 miles) and the Protea Trail (1.6 km/1-mile) and their tea garden is open on weekends.

Now, I’ve added this spot under “leisure” because I’ve got a sweet tooth for chocolate and can eat it any time of day – it’s a ‘leisurely activity’ for someone like me.
This handmade, high-quality, gooey, divine piece of heaven was right up my alley (no pun intended). I especially liked the peppercorn, saffron and cinnamon-infused flavours.
You’ll need to call to make a booking and they also have truffle-making workshops too! Is this what heaven is like?
4. Massages & Retreats
After my adrenaline-packed adventures in Tulbagh, there’s nothing I look forward to more than a relaxing massage. The town offers several boutique spas and retreats, such as Trident Health Centre and Vindoux Guest Farm & Spa, where one can unwind and rejuvenate. It’s a treat for the body and soul, and as someone who values health and wellness, it’s an experience I live for!
